Flash back Friday: Bruges Waffles & Frites

By Kristie Bringhurst from The Resolution

Who needs an excuse to eat a good waffle, right? Well, if it's waffles you're after, you might want to stop by Bruges Waffles and Frites. Bruges was established two and a half years ago by Belgian, Pierre Vandamme and he really knows his confections and indulgences. Bruges offers a selection of various waffles including The Torpedo- a waffle pumped full of imported Belgian chocolate. Bruges most popular meal is not, however, waffles, but an over the top, incredibly delicious sandwich called The Machine Gun- a sandwich with complete with andalouse mayonnaise, two lamb sausages, and mounds of frites, all served on a french baguette.

Bruges has no indoor seating, so make sure to grab a seat on their rooftop terrace and enjoy the view of Pioneer Park. This little restaurant is packed full of amazing food, wonderful customer service and loads of charm. We definitely recommend a visit.

Flash Back Friday: Chunga's Mexican Food

By Kristie Bringhurst from The Resolution

Utah has a lot of great Mexican food. There's no denying that. If authentic Mexico City style Mexican is what you're after however, Chunga's is the place to go. Located in Rose Park, Chunga's is a diamond in the rough and given a five star rating from UrbanSpoon.com. Most recommend getting the al Pastor on your first visit (it's to die for), but no matter what meal you choose, you can be positive it will be packed to the brim with flavor and freshness. The one thing you cannot leave without is a heaping glass of Agua de Piña. Frothy and sweet, that drink alone will have you coming back for more. Don't be intimidated by the authenticity. The bilingual staff at Chunga's is friendly and welcoming. Next time you're in the area, don't be afraid to walk in and treat yourself to this Mexican treasure.

You can try to deny the craving for that cheesy goodness above, but we recommend just getting some for yourself. You won't regret it.

9th South Delicatessen

By Kristie Bringhurst from The Resolution

One Saturday, my husband and I decided to venture to a specific place for sandwiches. Unfortunately, they had already stopped serving them by that point in the day, but the guy working at the counter suggested we head down the street to a little deli we had never heard of. We decided to give it a try. That deli was the 9th South Delicatessen. Since that first encounter, we have been back numerous times and always make sure to get extra macaroni salad to go.

9th South Delicatessen is located in the vibrant 9th and 9th area of Salt Lake and the impeccable food, homey decor, and friendly service make it a perfect fit in the area. 9th South Deli boasts having the best pastrami in America. That is no joke. You'll find yourself coming back for more again and again. But then again, just about everything about this place will contribute to that.

The interior is beautifully painted in bright pastels and adorned with various imported goods and other unique food and products. Speaking of unique food, 9th South Deli offers kugel, knish, latka, beet/potato salad, matzo ball and incredible soups. Seriously, 9th South has just about everything you could want from an amazing turkey-cranberry sandwich, to delicious side salads, to wonderful treats and desserts.

If you're interested in giving 9th South Delicatessen a try, visit them between 10:55am and 5:05pm Monday thru Saturday at 931 E 900 S. Call (801) 517-3663 for any questions or to reserve the deli for a private party.

Zoo Lights at Utah's Hogle Zoo

By Kristie Bringhurst from The Resolution

Are we all excited for Christmas? I know I am! Over here at la Casa de Bringhurst, my husband and I are trying to fit in what we like to call "The 12 Dates of Christmas." There are all sorts of fun things to do in Salt Lake for the holidays, but we wanted to do something we have never experienced before. After some deliberation, we opted to go to Zoo Lights at The Hogle Zoo for one of our dates.

During this one time of year, the zoo is decorated to the hilt with incredible displays of Christmas lights. You can walk around and enjoy the sights while also seeing all of the incredibly cute animals the zoo has to offer who are a little more active at night. The animals prancing about include various miniature cats, reindeer, tigers, leopards, reptiles, and adorable cuddling monkeys.

If you're concerned about the cold getting to you and/or your kids, there are plenty of opportunities to warm up indoors including animal exhibits and concession stands. You'll have to try some of The Hogle Zoo's deep fried s'mores and tasty hot chocolate.

Hurry up and get your tickets! Zoo Lights only runs until December 31st (closed on Christmas)! Tickets are affordable at $6 for adults and $4 for children.

Carlucci's Bakery

By Kristie Bringhurst from The Resolution

Okay, so we all know it's the holiday season, which mean there will be lots of baking involved which means lots of extra dirty dishes and lots of stress. What if this year, instead of worrying about all that, you just order some amazing pastries from Carlucci's Bakery? I don't mean to toot my own horn, but I know a good pastry and Carlucci's is full of them. They have fresh croissants, out-of-this-world cheesecake, and everything in between. Located in the bustling hub of downtown Salt Lake, Carlucci's Bakery received the "Best Bakery in Salt Lake 2009 Award" from City Weekly and continues to impress foodies and the general public alike. Not only is the food to die for, the staff is incredibly friendly and the calming interior will have you mingling over your delicious sandwich or fresh baked focaccia for quite a while.

If you're planning on ordering some of Carlucci's delectable confections, get your order in as soon as possible. You won't want to miss out on these tasty treats. Have a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year!

I Heart Salt Lake Contributor- Kristie

Meet Kristie Bringhurst, she is a contributor here on I Heart Salt Lake.

You might recognize her from her lifestyle blog, The Resolution.
Years living in Utah ?
I have lived in Utah for a little over four years now. It feels like so much longer! Haha.

Favorite local restaurant?
I’m going to go with Moochies. I know they’re most known for their meatball subs, but I can’t get enough of their cheese steaks  and cream soda. Mmm. Don’t even get me started on their brownies.

Favorite places to shop in the Salt Lake Valley?
I have a secret obsession with Tabula Rasa. What can I say? Stationary is my weakness. Oh and speaking of weaknesses, I really love RubySnap.

Best thing about Salt Lake/Utah?
The farmer’s market in Pioneer Park, hands down, is the best thing about Salt Lake. I go almost every week during the summer to buy all of my produce for the week. I love that you can buy everything that you need, locally, in one central location.

Anything else you want to add?
I really enjoy living in downtown Salt Lake. I love that the city is busy and bustling, but that it’s also small and welcoming. It’s that perfect mixture that so many cities try to achieve, but very few actually accomplish.
