Splendor Beauty Emporium

By Dianna Davis

Splendor Beauty Emporium in Foothill Village has become the go to place of beauty seekers throughout the state of Utah.  Inside the pretty pink building you will find all the brands you have grown to love plus the brands you can't seem to find at other places.

Splendor has a wide selection of skin care products, cosmetics, nail polish and perfume but that's not all. Cosmetic cases, jewelry, candles, sweet smelling soaps or lotions and more. It's the perfect place to pick up a gift any girl would love.

The staff is very knowledgeable and willing to help you find just what you're looking for. They can help you find the best products for you, provide you with professional makeup application and offer application tips.  Unlike the crowded (and impersonal) makeup counters at department stores, Splendor employees always provide the best service.

Make sure to stay up to date with Splendor by following them on Twitter or Facebook.

Riverdance

Have you ever seen Riverdance on TV? I had and thought it was kind of funny.  Then I was invited to a performance.  My family teased me a little bit about going.  Of course my sports-oriented boys would.  But my dancing daughter thought I might enjoy the show.  So I went. I had no idea how much I would enjoy it. I was pleasantly surprised.  Riverdance was amazing!

Lucky for us they are in town again.  If you are even slightly interested, go.  It will be a great show.

Mo Bettah Steaks

Have you ever been to the islands?  When there did you eat a plate lunch?  Did you have some teriyaki chicken or grilled steak.  Well, if you did, get ready for the memories to come back.  And if you've never been, get ready for a taste from the islands.  Because that's what you'll get at Mo Bettah Steaks.

At Mo Bettah Steaks they are grilling up fresh steaks and chicken  and serving up delicious kalua pig too.  The meals come with rice and tossed or macaroni salad.  The steak and chicken come either teriyaki or pulehu style.  Both are so good it's hard to choose.  Lucky for us they have combo options.  We love it all so much that it's hard to say what our favorite is.

Pickup a shave ice while you're there.  It's another great hawaiin treat!

Carol's Pastries

Located in the heart of Sugarhouse is Carol's Pastries.  In fact it can be tricky to find.  But it's well worth the effort.  Down a one-way lane, the exterior doesn't look like much.  But once you open the door the smells and the sights of the baked goods will grab you.

Carol's has some of the best eclairs in the Salt Lake Valley.  In fact, my mother took 6 dozen of them in her carry-on packages for a wedding in Houston one year.  The wedding just wouldn't be complete without some eclairs from Carol's.

But that's not all they make.  Carol's is a full service bakery.  Cakes, cookies, pastries, pies, breads and so much more.  These aren't your grocery store type of baked goods.  Carol's takes extra care by using quality
ingredients.

Call ahead for special orders.

Kyoto Japanese Restaurant

When I am craving Japanese food I head to Kyoto. With their large menu and even bigger sushi menu I am sure to always find something to suit my appetite. The portions are quite large, especially the tempura.
Kyoto's tempura is some of the best in Salt Lake. I have been known to head to Kyoto just for a plate of vegetable tempura.

The decor is traditional and the servers even wear kimonos. The servers are attentive and are quite accommodating. Though they have great sushi, my favorites are the beef sukiyaki and teriyaki chicken.

If you're looking to save some money, try Kyoto for lunch. They have great lunch specials.
The weekends can get quite busy so make sure to call ahead for a reservation.

Four and Twenty Sailors

As a mom with a young child I know how hard it can be to find dressy or special occasion clothing, that's where Four and Twenty Sailors steps in. They specialize in fine baby, children and ladies clothing.
They celebrate classic styles that both children and moms will love.

Four and Twenty Sailors has a wide selection of European and domestic clothing, shoes and accessories.
Quality and craftsmanship are always present is their clothing assortment.

The dress selection can't be beat! Four and Twenty Sailors has a large selection of dresses  that any girl would love. The unique assortment of dresses are age appropriate and won't leave you wondering how many girls will be wearing the same dress.

We love the wide variety of christening/blessing gowns for both boys and girls. Our favorites are the Feltman Brothers line because of the amazing hand sewn details and the vintage gowns, some even date back as early as the late 1800's.

Don't forget the boys, you can dress your boys stylishly from a baby into their teen years.
You will find quality sportswear for young children and teens.

Four and Twenty Sailors also has a great sale room.  There is a lot to choose from and everything is at least 50 % off.

Moms, don't forget to pick something up for your self.

Elaine’s Quilt Block

By Beth Davis

This excellent shop is for everyone who loves gorgeous fabrics. A walk through Elaine's Quilt Block is candy for your eyes and a quick fix for any quilt junkie. The fabric selection is huge and varied. Contemporary, Classy, Vintage or Sassy. The variety they stock is complete.

Ten years into this endeavor, owner and manager Marilyn Cowan is still passionate about her business. With a mission statement of  “Preserving the Art and Joy of Quilt Making”, she offers the tools and know- how to make it happen. Even the Federalist style of the building speaks of days gone by when handwork was a necessity rather than the luxury it is today.

Marilyn honors her mother in the shop name, it was from her that she learned to love fabric. That appreciation shows in the range and period fabrics that are available.

I’m a “Quilter”, but only just. I tend to make a lot of quick projects, and leave the intricate work for the real artists. Regardless of my ability, thankfully I have always been helped with my queries, and great advice is willingly offered from the knowledgeable staff.

Elaine’s also offers classes in a variety of quilting techniques and the classes are limited in size to allow each student the best possible experience.

Quilting and giving are often synonymous and in this aspect Elaine’s Quilt Block really shines. Each year the shop provides the fabrics and patterns for local enthusiasts to create a quilt for someone in need. Packets are prepared and distributed through the shop. Quilters stitch them up and return them completed. Last year the Asian Refugee Center received 100 quilts. This year’s recipient will be Adopt an Elder.

Quilting is available, if you need professional quilting done and she even carries supplies for those sweet hemstitched receiving blankets that one can crochet the edges of. I’ve had them hemstitch my own choice of fabric, as flannel is also available in great variety.

Oh  and the bargain corner! I always check it out . I almost never find a dollar fat quarter I don’t like.
I just completed a quilt for Maci, my niece’s new baby girl. The quilt top was made from 4 fat quarters found on the bargain table, plus a half yard of super cute coordinating fabric off the full price bolt. The
entire quilt top cost just $9 bucks. Maci seemed indifferent, but her mama loved it!

It’s a quilt shop, but don’t let “Quilt” in the name scare you off if you don’t indulge. If you want fabric for any project, Elaine's has one of the best collections in the Valley.

Mountain City Restaurant

In a strip mall in Holladay sits one of our favorite places to get Chinese food , Mountain City Restaurant.
We have been gobbling up Chinese grub from Mountain City for years!

The restaurant is small and intimate, you will even find the owner waiting tables. She is always ready to chat and offer suggestions. We also love the fast takeout service and are always surprised to know the owner remembers us (she has quite a memory).

Of course we suggest you try the ham fried rice but the fortune chicken is a must as well.
Another favorite is the beef and broccoli, oh and don't forget the egg rolls.

We Heart Locals- Simply Utah

As you know, we love supporting all things local. The same goes for Simply Utah, a local website that recognizes and spotlights the creative talent in our state.

Simply Utah was launched in February 2010 by two sisters, Lyndsay and Leslie. They wanted to create a place where Utah's talent could easily be found in one place. Each Week they feature new companies and products. The best part is, the featured company offers a discount to Simply Utah readers that day.

One of my favorite things about Simply Utah is their event list. there you will find a big list of Utah boutiques and craft shows. Where else can you find such a thing?

You can stay up to date with Simply Utah by liking them on Facebook.

Pierre Country Bakery & Cafe

We love artisan bread.  You know the kind.  The thick chewy crust, the soft inside with the buttery taste.  Pierre Country Bakery and Cafe makes that kind of bread fresh every day.  But there is so much more at Pierres.  They make the flakiest croissants, delicious cakes and cookies and pastries.

Pierres Country Bakery and Cafe serves delicious soups, salads, and sandwiches.  We love their chicken salad sandwich on a fresh croissant.  They also have a daily 1/2 sandwich, 1/2 soup or 1/2 salad special.  Don't forget to add in a fresh cookie or pastry.

Last summer you could also find Pierre Country Bakery at the Salt Lake Farmers Market.  We look forward to finding them there again this year.

I Spy...

Salt lake has some fun and memorable sights.
We thought it would be fun to show some of them to you periodically.

Although the Salt Lake Costume Company went out of business several years ago, their sign is still there.
We thinks it's a pretty cool sign!

Do you know where this sign is located?

By Beth Davis

It’s obvious when you walk through the door that Utrecht knows their business. Utrecht Art Supplies can supply you with the tools for your creative needs. They are well stocked with quantity and variety, whether novice or professional they have you covered.

Being a dabbler in several mediums, I find what I need and a great deal more. But what I like best is that the staff knows exactly what I need and where to find it.  Located on the street level of the Petersen’s Art Studios bldg. in the heart of Sugarhouse, they are easy to find and get to.

The store is stocked full with everything needed to explore one's creativity. Whether you need supplies for painting, drawing, sculpting, framing, printmaking, etc. you are sure to find it at Utrecht.
