Shooting The Tube...where old signs go to die

By Travis Davis

Growing up in Salt Lake affords kids both young and old ample opportunity to enjoy the outdoors.  With the unique terrain, Salt Lake’s surrounding areas are the epitome of a playground for those who love adventure.

The mountains surrounding the valley can excite you with plenty of activities to kill a little cabin fever.  Shooting the Tube is a local favorite.  Many who frequent The Tube are longtime fans of this inexpensive pastime. Often times, the only supply needed to enjoy it is a flotation device.  Plus, most who love this cheap entertainment are willing to lend a helping hand or give tips/tricks on the optimal setup.

The idea is simple.  Parley’s Stream flows down the Canyon eventually running through an aqueduct under the freeway. The aqueduct known as “The Tube” begins near the base of Suicide Rock and exits into a large pool on the eastern side of Tanner Park. Blocking the stream with plywood (or in our most recent visit, old signs), a tarp and something rigid like a 2x4 creates a temporary dam.  With riders ready inside the tube, the dam is released sending them on a wave of built up water and “Shooting the Tube” into the pool at the bottom.  It should be noted that the makeshift dam should be tied in some way to the walls of the aqueduct, thus preventing unwanted cargo following you to the bottom.

I’ve yet to hear of anyone who has tried it and walked away disappointed.

Where:
Access via the parking lot on Wasatch Blvd. The Parleys bike trail will lead you down a path adjacent to the freeway.  Follow it until you see a small dirt access road.  Follow the Dirt road to the creek.

When:
Memorial Day – Labor Day work fine but June and July are generally the best.  The winter runoff prior to the summer months flows far too large to even attempt.  Anytime after July and the creek is fairly small making for longer waits to enjoy.

What:
Footwear: Avoid being barefoot, sandals or slip-ons.  The hike down is a cinch but the hike out is always harder after a days worth of fun, dirt trails and wet clothing.  We’ve found it’s best to wear an old pair shoes or some cheap Velcro Walmart shoes.

Flotation Device: Inner tubes and pool floats are always a safe bet.  Unless the inflatables are durable, I would recommend something cheap.

Misc.: No one will be upset if you bring new dam building supplies to use.  Rope, boards/plywood and 2x4s are always welcome.

Trash: Be aware that the area does get a lot of visitors.  That being said, please, please, please pack in a trash bag and at the very least, leave the area better than you found it.

Red Mango Frozen Yogurt Smoothies

Have you been to Red Mango?  Have you tried their delicious frozen yogurt?  We have and we love it.

But have you tried the Red Mango Frozen Smoothies?  We recently tried a few and they were so yummy.  So good in fact, we were glad we had ordered the large!

Red Mango has some new "Super Biotic Smoothies" this Summer!  These new smoothies come in four new lifestyle-centered categories; Twisted Fruits, Body Balance, All Fruit Harmony and Just Kiddin'.

The Twisted Fruit category are smooth and creamy signature yogurt smoothies altered in new and innovative fruit-forward ways.

The Body Balance category has flavorful and functional yogurt smoothie formulated with beneficial boosts.

The All Fruit Harmony group features refreshing dairy-free and soy-free smoothies made only with fruit, juice and ice.

And the Just Kiddin'

We tried the Berry Banana and the Super PB Cup.  The Berry Banana had strawberries, blueberries and banana.  At Red Mango they never use frozen fruit.  It's always fresh, ripe fruit and you can tell the difference in this smoothie.

The Super PB Cup was a delicious combination of peanut better and chocolate with an added fat burner boost. Both smoothies although different from each other were very creamy and tasted exactly like their names.  We would definitely buy those two again, but we want to stop in soon and try some of the other great combinations.

Red Mango has plenty of locations in the Salt Lake Valley.  We stopped by the Sugarhouse location and we were met by a friendly and helpful staff. Red Man Here's where you can check out your closet location.

Utah Field House of Natural History State Park Museum in Vernal Utah

Don't let the plain exterior fool you, the Field House of Natural History State Park Museum in Vernal Utah  is lots of fun. The 22,000 square foot museum has exhibits both inside and out.
One of my favorite things and has been a favorite since I was little, is the life size dinosaur garden. My son loved this part too! The garden has 17 full sized replicas.

The Natural History State Park Museum is full of interactive exhibits that both children and adults will love.

We loved the wall of fossils.

Grilling Tips and a LongHorn Steakhouse Giveaway

Just in time for the 4th of July holiday weekend we have some great grilling tips for you and a giveaway, all from LongHorn Steakhouse!

Here are a few tips from the grill masters at LongHorn Steakhouse to help you grill the perfect steak this 4th of July

Selecting Your Steak
·         When selecting a steak, remember three things: cut, marbling and freshness.
·         Marbling is the whiteness that runs through the steak and makes it juicy.
·         Filets, sirloins and ribeyes are three common cuts you can find at your local grocer.
o    Filets are lean and tender. They have a buttery texture and subtle flavor.
o    Sirloins are also a lean cut and are very juicy.
o    Bone-in Ribeye has the most marbling – and is the juiciest and most flavorful steak.
·         Fresh steak is always best because it guarantees the meat will be tender and juicy.

Seasoning Your Steak
·         Seasoning helps the true flavor of the meat shine and can add another layer of taste to the meal.
·         For steaks, LongHorn uses one of three secret dry seasonings, but similar flavors can be achieved at home.
·         Combine salt, pepper, onion powder and garlic powder and mix it together. Adjust the seasonings as needed.
·         Don’t be shy when seasoning. Season the steak boldly. Sprinkle and rub the seasoning on both sides of the meat, making sure it’s coated.

Grilling Your Steak
·         If you’re using an outdoor chargrill, fully clean and prep it using a wire-bristled brush and light coat of vegetable or olive oil.
·         Heat the surface of the grill so that it’s very hot – about 500 degrees.
·         Sear the steak until grill marks appear, then give it a quarter turn while on the same side. Flip and repeat.
·         For the LongHorn Steakhouse experience at home, pair your perfectly grilled steak with a delicious side, like a sweet potato or fresh vegetables.

And if you need more help, now through July 7th you can call the LongHorn Steakhouse Grilling Hotline.
